Profiles of the MISLS Students of Chinese and Korean Ancestry with Surname Beginning with L

The Americans and aliens of Chinese and Korean ancestry are the focus of this project. The registries and album had their names and most of their Army serial numbers. Ancestry.com was used to locate many of them in the censuses, passenger lists, school yearbooks, city directories, military records etc. The National Archives’ Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File was a helpful in confirming information in the registries. Another source was the scrapbook of Oak T. “Lawrence” Jay, my father, who had photographs and ephemera of his time at the MISLS.

The race of some students is unclear. There were thirteen students with the Lee surname. Four of them have a first name initial. Marion L. Lee (April 5, 1916, Tokyo, Japan – March 29, 2000, Lynnwood, Washington) was Caucasian, the son of Mormon missionary parents. He was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and later became a Japanese language teacher in Seattle. He is listed in the registry but not the merged registry. In the merged registry is Moon S. Lee who enrolled July 1943, the same time as Marion. Moon may have been from Salt Lake City, Utah, the same city as Marion. Maybe there was a mix-up with the names.

Lim Poon Lee—former postmaster of San Francisco
A memorial service will be held on Monday in San Francisco for Lim Poon Lee, the former post master of San Francisco who once said his only experience for the job was “walking up to the window and putting down a nickel for a four-cent stamp.”

Mr. Lee died June 7 in a San Francisco convalescent hospital following a stroke. He was 91.

A native of Hong Kong and the son of a laundry operator, Mr. Lee came to the United States when he was 8 months old. He was a U.S. Army counterintelligence specialist during World War II, a student at College of the Pacific and Lincoln University law school and a longtime social worker and juvenile probation officer. He also wrote for the Chinese Digest, a monthly Chinatown news magazine [here and here].

For years he was a tireless campaign organizer for local Democrats, including former California Gov. Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, former San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and former Rep Phillip Burton.

In 1966, backed by Burton, Mr. Lee was appointed postmaster of San Francisco. At the time it was the highest federal appointive post ever held by a Chinese American.

“I have very little experience,” a smiling Mr. Lee said when he was sworn in. “But I don’t think I’ll foul up the mails. If I flunk the (Civil Service) exam, I may run for Congress.”

His daughter Dorinda Ng said that Mr. Lee “didn’t even know how much a stamp cost when he got the job.”

Mr. Lee quickly mastered the nuances of the job and, during his 14-year tenure, the San Francisco post office greatly increased its hiring of minority and disabled persons and started an alcoholic recovery program.

In the late 1980s, he was a member of the state Fair Political Practices Commission and a columnist for the newspaper Asian Week.

Mr. Lee was a Methodist chaplain and known as “The Preacher Postmaster.” He was active in regional Methodist affairs and served on the boards of the Chinatown YMCA, the Greater Chinatown Community Service Association and the Chinese American Civic Council. For many years he served as the master of ceremonies for the annual Chinese New Year parade, announcing the passing floats with characteristic wit and flair.

Mr. Lee is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine of San Francisco, whom he met on a picket line in 1936 when they were protesting the sale of scrap iron to Japan. He is also survived by children Rosalind Chooey and Chesley Lee of San Francisco, Dorinda Ng of Foster City, and Lynnette Lee of Fremont.

Lawrence Lun Lew
September 1, 1922 – August 23, 2017
Lawrence (Larry) Lew, 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 23, 2017, just shy of his 95th birthday. He was born in San Francisco on September 1, 1922, the 2nd of 5 children of Way and Kim Jee Lew. On August 17, 1947, Larry married Evelyn, the love of his life. They had 3 daughters: Christine, Laurie, and Elise.

Larry spent several of his elementary school years in Guangdong, China and maintained his Cantonese language ability and literacy throughout his life. Even in his late eighties, one of Larry’s favorite activities was doing advanced level high school Mandarin homework with his grandchildren. Upon his return to San Francisco, Larry attended Francisco Jr. High School and Galileo High School.

Larry was a WWII Veteran, serving in the US Army from October 1943 to June 1946. His main assignment was at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, MN, where he was the company clerk. He was later assigned as a translator in China Theater Headquarters in Chungking and Shanghai in 1945. His month-long journey from NY to China were some of the most memorable moments of his life. He especially recalled spending VE Day in Times Square and flying over the Himalayas, which he adoringly called the “hump”.

After the war, Larry went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Education Administration from SFSU. He spent his entire career working for the SFUSD as an elementary school teacher, field psychometrist, District Test Coordinator, and project manager of a pilot Chinese Bilingual program.

Always the teacher, Larry was especially proud of his Sut Yung Ying Yee television series where he taught practical English to the Chinese community. Although his mother had been in the US for over 50 years by the 1970’s, she learned more English by watching her son on TV than she did through real time communication.

Larry was a lifelong member of the Chinese Congregational Church in San Francisco, a master bridge player, and an avid scratch golfer.  One of Larry’s fondest accomplishments was when he shot a hole in one!

Family and friends had a tender spot for Larry’s kindness, steadfastness, and beautiful soul.  His witty sense of humor, gregarious nature, and passion for life will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Larry was preceded by the untimely death of his precious 3-year-old daughter, Laurie in 1958, and his beloved wife Evelyn in 2009. He was the last surviving sibling of the Lew family; George, Edith, Marshall, and William. He is survived by his daughters Christine Quan (Benson) of El Cerrito and Elise Louie (Henry) of Honolulu, his 4 grandchildren, Geoffrey (Michelle) and Gregory Quan, Kyle and Mikaela Louie, and his treasured great grandson Dash Quan.

Family and friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Life which will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:00 am at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Larry’s memory with a donation to your favorite charity in his name.
