Profiles of the MISLS Students of Chinese and Korean Ancestry with Surname Beginning with C

The Americans and aliens of Chinese and Korean ancestry are the focus of this project. The registries and album had their names and most of their Army serial numbers. Ancestry.com was used to locate many of them in the censuses, passenger lists, school yearbooks, city directories, military records etc. The National Archives’ Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File was a helpful in confirming information in the registries. Another source was the scrapbook of Oak T. “Lawrence” Jay, my father, who had photographs and ephemera of his time at the MISLS.

page 125: Although the War Department did not commit major ground forces to China or Burma, in November 1942 MISLS sent one graduate, Lt. Won-Loy Chan, a Chinese American, to serve as a liaison officer for General Stilwell.[111]

page 142: From time to time the Army would send Chinese Americans to the MISLS for Japanese-language training. The first class at Crissy Field included two Chinese American reserve officers, Won Loy Chan and Robert F. Pang. Officers in the Military Intelligence Service hoped that their knowledge of written Chinese would help them Japanese kanji.…

page 221: Over the winter of 1944–1945 a sprinkling of combat veterans, including Caucasian team leaders such as eugene Wright, John Anderton, and Lachlan Sinclair, was assigned to Camp Ritchie. Others found themselves assigned to PACMIRs by chance. For example, in March 1945 general Joseph W. Stilwell happened to visit Fort sill, Oklahoma, where he noticed a Chinese American who had served on his staff in Burma. Capt. Won-Loy Chan, a graduate of Stanford university and later of MISLS, had spent twenty-three months in the China-Burma-india theater as an intelligence officer. Stilwell greeted Chan with characteristic bluntness: “Charlie, what the hell are you doing here?” Chan began to explain, but Stilwell would not listen. “You don’t belong here, Charlie,” he said. Shortly afterward Chan received orders for PACMIRs, where he became the liaison officer with the center’s translation customers.[81]

page 276: The first MISLS graduate to arrive in India was not a Nisei, but a Chinese American, Lt. Won-Loy Chan. the Stanford graduate spoke Cantonese and had learned Japanese at Crissy Field and Camp Savage. In April 1943 he joined Stilwell’s headquarters as an intelligence officer.[120]

NCAC consisted of two Chinese divisions and a regiment-size American infantry unit, the 5307th Composite unit (Provisional), which had arrived in India in October 1943. To command the unit Stilwell personally selected Brig. Gen. Frank D. Merrill, who had served as a language attaché in Tokyo before the war. Newsmen dubbed the unit Merrill’s Marauders.[127]

Anderton from the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS), Capt. Won-Loy Chan from Burma, 1st Lt. Sunao Phil Ishio from ATIS, M.Sgt. George M. Koshi from MISLS, 2d Lt. Dye Ogata from the South Pacific, 1st Lt. Toshio G. Tsukahira from MISLS, and Lt. Col. Eugene A. Wright from the South Pacific serving as deputy chief.

United States Department of State, Division of Cultural Cooperation, 1944 issue
Chinese Student “G.I.”
Private Frank Wen-han Chen, a native of Hankow, China, and a former recipient of a Department of State grant, was inducted into the Army of the United States in August, 1944. Private Chen arrived in the United States in 1940, received his B.A. degree in Physics at Carleton College, studied Meteorology at the University of Chicago, and was training with the U.S. Weather Bureau in Kansas City, Missouri, before he entered the Army.

The following is an extract from a latter which Private Chen wrote to the Department, describing his Army life:

“By the Army Books of course I’m no different from any other American rookie. Yet from time to time I feel I still am that Chinese student who came to this country to ‘learn a trade’. Only now, the ‘civvies’ are left behind and the uniform has been put on with a new responsibility added to the shoulders at the same time.

“Being in the Army has not stopped my identification as an alien student. It happens almost everyday that some buddies of mine come over and ask about how I came to stay in this country or what I had done before induction. That reflects the curiosity as well as concern on the part of many American young men over the welfare of their Chinese brothers ... It remains a pleasure to tell them all about my background. On many occasions the conversation may lead into other points about China. I usually get a kick out of talking with them on this subject.

“Another real pleasure in the Infantry is the Army food. It’s rich in energy content and vitamin values. We have a few good cooks besides. They make it a point to so prepare the ration as to boost the soldiers’ morale three times a day ... We are honestly satisfied even though once in a while some chowhounds appear at the table. If this occurs, some fellow eaters will necessarily miss out on the potatoes, meat, milk, or wheat cakes (all of these are favorite items)”.

(Everett, Washington)
July 1, 2009
Our beloved father, William P. Chin, Sr., 89, died quietly in Everett on June 28, 2009. He was much loved and will be deeply missed.

Bill was born in Canton Province on January 16, 1920. Educated at Puying Prepatory School in Canton, at 18, he immigrated to the USA where he settled in Seattle, WA, furthering his education at Broadway High School.

Following WWII military service in the US Army, he married our mother, Dorothy, of Vancouver, B.C. and settled in Everett to live and raise our large family of seven children.

Our father lived the American dream, first working the canneries in Alaska, learning the restaurant trade at the Piedmont Hotel in Seattle, then working with our grandfather, Tom, at the Shanghai Café in Everett. He and our mother would, in 48 years, own and operate seven restaurants in the Snohomish County area.

Bill is survived by his five sons and two daughters and their spouses, Howard Chin, John and Virginia Chin, of Renton, WA, Rosalyn Kwan and her husband, Patrick Kwan, of Bellevue, WA, Ronald and Suana Chin, of Mukilteo, WA, William Chin, Jr. and fiancé, Susan, Thomas and Mabel Chin, of Mill Creek, WA, and Tamara Chin. He was blessed with fifteen grandchildren, Patrick, Nicholas, Max, Michael Spencer, Matthew, Michael David, Allison, Andrea, Alexander, Andrew, Christine, Caroline, William III, Joseph and George. Bill is also survived by his nephews, Bennie Hong and Allen Chin and their families.

Bill devoted his life and love to his wife, Dorothy, who predeceased him by 15 years, and his children and grandchildren. He reveled in their success and accomplishments. His hard work resulted in graduating all seven children from college, three also earning Juris Doctorate Degrees.

Our father was a long time member of Immaculate Conception Parish, the Washington Athletic Club and former member of Long Acres Owners and Trainers Association. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed fishing, thorough bred horseracing, casino gaming and Chinese painting and calligraphy.

A family Rosary will be said at 9 a.m., Friday, July 3, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception, a committal service will follow at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline. Arrangements are entrusted to Purdy & Walters with Cassidy funeral home in Everett.

Eugene Kwai Yuen Ching lived a beautiful life for 93 years. He saw so many changes during that time and he was ready to move to the mansion the Lord had prepared for him. As a young boy, he lived and played in Waikiki where his father had a cottage complex on Beach Walk. He was married to Mable C.S. Chang for 26 years and Tomi Ching for 35 years. An officer and veteran of World War II, he worked for and retired from the State of Hawaii Dept of Health in 1972. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He enjoyed meeting new friends from all over the world, playing bridge and mahjong. He was the oldest member of 24 hour fitness where he enjoyed exercising and meeting new friends. His motto was, “health is wealth”. He is survived by: his daughter, Emily Chang; his son, Christopher (Roxanna) Ching; six grandchildren; and six great grand children. He will have a military burial and funeral service at the National Veterans’ Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on September 6, 2011 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

Sheila Chin Morris Interview
with Sherri Gebert-Fuller
October 2, 2002
Waseca, Minnesota
excerpt
SM: Again, I could walk in the front door of the Nankin and Howard Chinn... I think some people get my dad mixed up with [him] because of the last name, but Howard spelled Chinn with two ‘n’s. He looked like a sumo wrestler. He was a great person in size and in generosity. He was kind of a bouncer for the place, too. He didn’t let just anybody... Anyway, he was very gracious to me when he finally met me and knew that I was working downtown. My dad was very proud of me. If he saw me, he’d say, “Ah, Sheila, Sheila, come on, I bet you want to see your dad.” He’d say, “You go right through there. He’s right in the kitchen right there. Do you want a table? I’ll find you a table.” He would find me nice quiet little table and he’d get me a drink or something and, then, “Did you tell your dad what you want? Okay.” He always took such great care of me. I missed [him] when he retired. It was not as much fun to walk into the Nankin.

Born in Korea, he has attended Aoaoyama Grakuin college in Tokyo, and Pasadena college in Los Angeles. When he first came to America in 1939 he was amazed at the absolute freedom of the American people; their right to free speech and spontaneous independent thinking.
