MISLS Registries and Album

Seiki Oshiro, Paul Tani and Grant Ichikawa compiled two registries with the names of men and women of Japanese, Chinese and Korean ancestry and Caucasians. The registries can be downloaded at Dokumen: Military Intelligence Service Language School Registry 1941–46 is here and Military Intelligence Service (MIS) Registry Merged is here.

A major source for the registries is The MISLS Album which was published by the graduates in 1946. The album can be downloaded, in two parts, at the California State University Japanese American Digitization Project: Part 1 and Part 2.

The Americans and aliens of Chinese and Korean ancestry are the focus of this project. The registries and album had their names and most of their Army serial numbers. Ancestry.com was used to locate many of them in the censuses, passenger lists, school yearbooks, city directories, military records etc. The National Archives’ Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File was a helpful in confirming information in the registries. Another source was the scrapbook of Oak T. “Lawrence” Jay, my father, who had photographs and ephemera of his time at the MISLS.

Here are the names of the Chinese and Koreans in The MISLS Album with full names or notes in brackets.
